What Is MAGO TMJ Treatment?

MAGO is an acronym for Maxillary Guided Anterior Orthotic. That might sound like quite a mouthful! Here is a breakdown of what each term means in the context of this unique therapy:

  • Maxillary – This term describes the upper jaw.
  • Anterior – This is used to refer to the front portion of the mouth (the front teeth). A MAGO device is placed on the upper front teeth.
  • Guided – The purpose of MAGO therapy is to guide the jaw into a more desirable position.
  • Orthotic – The main device used in MAGO treatment is a custom orthopedic device that is designed to stabilize the jaw joints.

How MAGO TMJ Treatment Works

If you are exhibiting symptoms of TMJ disorder, our team will evaluate your condition and determine which type of treatment may be most effective in your unique case. If it looks like MAGO might be the best solution for you, we will get to work on designing your custom orthotic.

Once you receive your device, you should wear it as much as possible. It will keep your teeth slightly apart and help your facial muscles and your jaw to relax. When you visit us for check-ins, we may slightly adjust your appliance so it can continue guiding your lower jaw into the proper position.

MAGO therapy may take 4 – 12 weeks, though for some patients, a 6-month course of treatment is necessary.

Some benefits of MAGO TMJ treatment include:

  • Pain relief. Rather than simply masking symptoms, MAGO therapy can actually relieve tension in the facial muscles and the jaw. By allowing these structures to rest, you can experience genuine pain relief.
  • Improved function. You may find that moving your jaw becomes easier, which can facilitate improved chewing, swallowing, and speaking.
  • Aids in diagnosis. Our team can use MAGO therapy to gain a deeper understanding of the issue that was causing your TMD symptoms.
  • Comfortable treatment. MAGO treatment is non-invasive and is generally considered to be painless.
